  • Quick answers to common questions

Why can’t I put control rods on the braided metal connectors “PumpSavers”, the specification call for them?

All braided metal hose assemblies can only function properly if the braid end-loads (remains in tension).  The corrugated metal hose only functions to contain the media.  It is the braid that must carry the system pressure.  If the braid is loose or bagged on the assembly it will create a void where the hose can squirm with-in the braid.  The squirm will lead to deformation of the hose convolutions which in turn will lead to premature failure of the hose.

The pipe run I have, and the thermal growth, is too great for one compensator so I’ll just put two compensators in the run.  This will work won’t it?

Two expansion devices can not be placed within a pipe section.  The two devices will work against each other as they can never be exactly matched.  All expansion devices can only function independently.  If you have more motion than one expansion device can handle you must split the run into separate sections with an intermediate anchor.

Why is Flex-Hose Co. directing me to a “stocking representative”, why can’t I just place the order directly with Flex-Hose directly?

Flex-Hose representatives are an integral part of our customer support structure.  They are factory trained and see many field applications of our products.  They are eager to assist you in determining the most suitable product for your flexible piping application.  In addition to their application expertise they bring our products closer to you by stocking the most used products locally.

How much axial compression can an SMP “braided metal PumpSaver” handle?

A braided metal hose assembly is suitable for vibration and/or lateral offset.  It is not capable of axial compression or extension.

Can I use an SMP or SMN in a steam application?

As long as the motion is just vibration or lateral offset and the pressure rating of the assembly is not exceeded (with the appropriate elevated temperature de-rating factor) they are suitable for with steam.

I don’t see the fitting I need on a braided hose assembly in the catalog or on the website.  Are other end fittings available?

Flex-Hose Co. manufactures all braided metal hose assemblies in E. Syracuse, NY.  If you have a special requirement please do not hesitate to contact our office (or your local representative).  If the fitting can be welded we can likely put it on a metal hose assembly.

How do I figure out how long an assembly I need to make a fixed offset of 3” with a 4” ID hose assembly?

There are several considerations that must be made. Give us a call with your specific application and we will gladly calculate it for you.

Why can’t I get a seal on the mating flange for the rubber expansion joint I just installed?

The most common answer to this problem is that the piping is not properly anchored and control rods have not been installed.  Once the system is pressurized the pressure thrust is trying to pull the connector off the mating flange.  You must either anchor the system or install and set the control rods in order to achieve a seal.
